NORTH STAR FAMILY PROGRAM

Are you working for a humanitarian or other benevolent cause but not getting the results you want because your writing is less effective than it could be?

Are you an engineer or designer creating helpful technologies but having difficulty expressing your ideas in writing to non-technical people?

This program is for you.

Through exercises and assignments, you will improve your written skills so you can more easily and quickly accomplish your goals.

PARTICIPANTS: Each program will have 3- 6 participants.

People in all industries and fields are very welcome. Your interest must be in serving the greater good, including but not limited to social justice, equity, inclusion, accessibility, and sustainability.

I am actively seeking diverse participants in order to foster cross-pollination of ideas and networks.

You must be 21 years or older.

All-women, all-parent, and other affinity cohorts possible. Please ask me about this.

DOCUMENTS: We will work on reports, proposals, statements of purpose, emails, resumes, cover letters, and/or work plans, among others.

ORAL SKILLS: Writing often requires discussion with colleagues. We will practice asking and answering questions effectively, brainstorming, interviewing, pitching, peer review, and active listening, among others.

DURATION: 1 session is 4- 6 weeks. I offer 3- 4 sessions per year.

Pilot starts January 2022.

FORMAT: Each week we’ll work on at least two documents: a combination of products that require multiple drafts, such as proposals and statements of purpose, and products that can be written in one sitting, such as short reports and reviews.

Once a week we’ll Zoom as a group to discuss the work. Also weekly I’ll Zoom with each participant individually.

Participants will be encouraged to share feedback with each other outside our Zoom meetings.

MODES: Zoom, Word, Google Workspace, email, and others

CONCEPT: We are in this life together, hence the term “Family.” By providing this program, I strive to make our world a better place, hence the term “North Star.”

{Please note the North Star Family Program is not an ESL program. If you would like help with improving your English, please ask me about this.}
